Quiet Your Rock Band Drums

Here's a nice do-it-yourself solution for quieting your Rock Band drums:

Time for Rock Band Arts and Crafts

Timo and I both used this technique, though slightly modified, and are quite pleased with the results. Instead of putting the colored felt on top, we put it on the bottom and put the black foam on top. It looks a lot better.

We cut the colored felt (bottom layer) a little larger than the black foam (top layer) so you get the same colored outline as the stock pad. We used these diameters: 6 1/2 inches for the foam rubber and 6 7/8 inches for the colored felt. This leaves a little bit of the colored part of the original surface peaking out around the edges.

Finally, for those of you who aren't feeling crafty. You can purchase something similar from rockbanddrumpads.com.

That is some nice work on the drums. How much of a sound difference does it make? You said you are pleased with the results, is it a big difference in the sound. The drums are so 'tappy' the way they come. The demo on the link sounds better but would rather get your opinions. Thanks for posting this Free. I might do the buy thing as I've been building lego's and iCoasters since Christmas. Having them ship ready to use might be called for. Game on.

I'd say the difference is in the type of sound you're hearing. Instead of a high-pitched tap-tap-tap, you get a lowered pitched thump-thump-thump. Higher pitched sounds seem to carry further and echo more so lowering the pitch makes a big difference -- a 50% reduction I'd guess.

I'd be happy to send the circle cutter we bought to anyone who wants to go the crafty route. It'll save you a few bucks but you still have to do the work.

I would also recommend the pads from http://www.DrumPads4RockBand.com
