Here's the scoop. Fore those who have read this rant via email, please excuse me, but I wanted to get as much mileage as possible from all these key strokes. The game play in Battlefield 2 did not disappoint me, but the online interface is horrible. Moreover, I am fairly certain that there is no way to set up a private game for just our group. The game play is perfect for having some tight cohesive team play, but there is no ready room before you launch to assign roles for a mission or an easy way to get everyone on the same page once the game has launched. You can hear your teammates when they are close to you, or use the white button to talk to your whole team -- much like H2-- but the game demands a super fast pace to capture objectives that prevents a good attack plan from being made. In the end, once the game starts you feel like you are on your own. The vehicles are great. I played 4 of the many maps. I think there may be as many as 12, with rumors of more downloadable maps in the works. The maps are really good. The Maps are very three dimensional, with great places to snipe, lots of cover, and different terrain. We played on one map that had a large bay and canals, and the patrol boats were super fun. We had four guys in one and made a run around the back of the map fragging lone enemies on the way, and ran the boat up on the beach and took the base in seconds. The Tanks, helicopters and jeeps are well done, as well as the weapons and different individual unit types. In the end, the game has huge potential, but the online play just is not there. I'm guessing that the lack of private games as an option stems from the fact that EA hosts the games on its own servers. I would be much happier to have a 16 player max via peer-to-peer and be able to set up private games, than have the additional 8 players. I am not giving up on the game. There is the ability to make a clan, and there may be a ready room in the clan matches, but cannot feel disappointed about the game. Halo 2 is still the King of the Hill.

Yep, Bungie deserves all the praise in the world for making such an excellent online interface. I had high hopes for BF2, and still plan on playing it frequently (until Nov. 22), but the online interface ruined what I think is a super-fun game. Actually, there is a way to set up a game, ask for low, medium or high skilled players, choose the map, etc. (optimatch > turn off auto connect > choose the top slot for new game), but there's only a limited amount of server space and if it's full, you're out of luck. Lame. I'm very sorry if I steered everyone wrong with BF2. None of the exhaustive research I did on this game mentioned the online functionality. And I ignorantly assumed that with the Halo 2 model out there, they'd at least do something close.
