Mondo's "first look" at Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

I've only had time to play the solo campaign mode. Awesome graphics, intense battles, and great ice-climbing (wha?). I think I like the controls and experience better than RB6V2. Of course this game will likely get shelved next week when L4D2 comes out.

I look forward to some multi-player and special ops (co-op) time with the 2130 crowd.

ODST Review: Rush Hour on the Coastal Highway

"Stupid humans"

It's 12:30am on Tuesday, September 22 and once again that feeling of anticipation builds as a lightning-storm themed Bungie logo fades into view. Armleg, Rossco and I have all endured midnight launch lines and a sneak peak is mandatory before heading to bed. After a few rounds of the Horde-inspired Firefight, we're all in agreement: ODST is definitely a Halo game.

The differences between ODSTs and Spartans are noticeable (smaller jumps, no duel-weilding, no equipment, new visor mode) but the gameplay is very familiar. The biggest change is the return of health packs for the more vulnerable ODST soldiers. Weapons are pretty much the same except for the beefed up pistol which is actually very effective now against grunts and jackals, especially from distance.

The three of us played Firefight on Heroic and it was very challenging. We only made it through one full round (5 waves) before heading off to bed. I played it later by myself on Easy and found that to be really fun.

The next day Armleg and I teamed up for a co-op run through the campaign on Legendary difficulty. Playing through the story with a friend is really enjoyable, especially the first time through. The story has a film noir vibe and the Rookie is like a private dick -- a detective that is. Exchanging theories about the story as it unfolds is what makes co-op so much fun.

Gripes about the campaign being short are exaggerated. It took us about 6-7 hours to get to the last level, and then things got nuts. The name of the last level is Coastal Highway and the highway portion kicked our asses -- in Armleg's case, literally. Similar to Halo 3 the last level involves a warthog run but this time the emphasis is on shooting instead of driving. Ghosts, Banshees, Phantoms and Towers all conspire to keep you from reaching the end of the road and in our case they succeeded. We spent an hour and a half trying to get past the highway only to stop because Armleg became physically ill from a combination of frantic gunfire on the Gauss Cannon and too much coffee in his system. Coastal Highway on Legendary with just two players is definitely a challenge. Give it a try.

Dead again on the Coastal Highway.

Beyond the gameplay we really enjoyed the voice acting from the cast of Firefly and the cylon lady from Battlestar Galactica. Your character, the rookie, never says a word. It was cool walking the streets of New Mombasa but the city felt kind of sterile to me. Most of the buildings were nondescript and very similar in architecture. There were very few signs for businesses, shops, services, etc. and zero citizens to be found. The entire city was deserted except for Covenant and UNSC troops. It made me appreciate the vibrancy of the city in Grand Theft Auto 4 that much more. One other note: there's no versus multiplayer in ODST, only Firefight. The game does come with three new maps for H3 multiplayer but we didn't fire those up.

Should you get it? Of course. If you love Halo you'll love this one too. Hope to play some Firefight with the rest of you soon.

2130 Texas Style

We had two of our best in Southern California for a meeting at Free/Tenlin base station last weekend. a leaver and rvndll joined Dunkel73, Free, Tenlin, Lil Armleg, and Armleg for a meeting of the minds of 2130.

It was really cool to meet them and hang. Did you know that people who live in Texas like beer just like us? It's true.

Thanks for having us over to base station SB Free & Tenlin.
Push the Button,
Armleg

Munn Toast

I'll never forget when Jack got a piece of toast from "the girl at the video game store." Thanks O. Munn for the treat and the show. (Top clip from 1000th episode of Attack of the Show. Bottom clip ... Munn Toast with Chobot Jam and Frankiebutter.)

Speaking of which, Comic-Con is right around the corner. I hear Bungie will be there on Thursday with a playable version of ODST Firefight mode. Too bad the show is sold out. :(

I think this is proof that a 2.5 year hiatus didn't seem to be much of a problem.

- you know he's bringing the smaktalk, prepare yourselves
- don't let him drive the scorpion!
- msg him repeatedly if you see he's on Netflix
- he's a workin' man, don't let him play on live later than 2330

Right shoulder - spin 180 - shove, shoot, shove...

I'm not going to say that I'm coming out of retirement just yet, however...

Left4Dead is the shiznay!

In this down economy - I recommend each of you go get a copy and come help Sharkie and I...oh no, here they come!

Sleeper Hit

Have you tried Left 4 Dead? Lost in all the fun of the big holiday releases was this little title that continues to deliver.

It found its way to my mailbox via GameFly a couple days ago and I have to tell you, for 4-player zombie slaying fun, this game delivers that and more. What I thought would be a dark FPS in the same vein of GOW or Half-Life actually turns out to be a romp through a stylized run and gun shooter with zombie hilarity abound.

There really is no experience like you and three of your buddies hunkered down in a corner, blasting away as the zombie hoard approaches. If you don't have Left 4 Dead, grab a buddy who does and try it for yourself. If you do have it, join the clan for some zombie blasting good times - and don't forget your med packs.
